Gaza war persists on its 100th day

In Gaza, the Israeli invasion marks its 100th day, bringing more civilian casualties and leaving relatives of captives waiting for freedom. The conflict has led to a humanitarian catastrophe for Gaza’s 2.4 million residents, with the UN and aid groups highlighting widespread destruction. Israel’s continuous military actions have resulted in the death of at least 24,100 people, predominantly women and children. Approximately 85 percent of the population has been displaced, facing challenges in accessing essentials like food, water, fuel, and medical care.

Mohammad Kahil, now in southern Gaza, describes a dire situation after 100 days of displacement from the north: “No food, no water, no heating. We are dying from the cold.”

UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini warns of diseases spreading rapidly, signaling an imminent famine.

The war in Gaza, ongoing since October, has intensified violence in Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria. Fears rise with US and British strikes in Yemen, prompting the Houthis to vow more attacks in solidarity with Gaza.

Over 100 people, including journalist Yazan al-Zwaidi, were reported martyred in recent attacks, drawing condemnation for alleged Israeli involvement.

At Al-Aqsa hospital in central Gaza, bodies arrive on a donkey cart after Israeli strikes. Hisham Abu Suweh, a civilian, expresses shock, stating, “We were sitting peacefully when the missile hit us.”

The World Health Organization notes that fewer than half of Gaza’s hospitals are functioning partially or at all.

On the Israel-Lebanon border, the Israeli army claimed to have killed three gunmen who crossed the frontier and attacked their forces. Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah questioned Israel’s achievements in the 100 days, emphasizing casualties.

Israel asserted dismantling Hamas’s command structure in Gaza’s north, but ongoing rocket launches contradict this. The military reported strikes on rocket launching pits and targets across Gaza, including Khan Yunis. Netanyahu stressed the need for additional security expenditures, stating the war would continue for months.

On the 100th day of captivity for Gaza captives, Israelis marked the occasion in Tel Aviv. The Histadrut held a 100-minute strike, and US President Biden acknowledged the tragic milestone. Hamas’s Abu Obeida suggested that many hostages might have been recently killed.

In a televised statement, Hamas held the enemy’s leadership and army fully responsible. On Sunday, Hamas released a video claiming to show three captives alive in Gaza, urging Israeli authorities for their return. The timing of the footage remains unclear. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant pledged not to forget or leave the captives behind.

In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed five Palestinians, including two shot at a checkpoint. Two sisters of Hamas’s deputy leader, Saleh al-Aruri, killed in Beirut, were detained. A US defense official confirmed Israel’s responsibility for the strike, raising concerns about a broader conflict.

In Egypt, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for the establishment of a Palestinian state and a ceasefire in Gaza.
