The Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a decision that prohibits any player in the Indian men’s cricket team from wearing the jersey number ‘7’ moving forward.

Every cricketer aspires to represent their country and adorn its shirt. They are assigned a jersey with different numbers and also have the option to choose their preferred jersey number.

Each player in the team is assigned a unique jersey number. Certain players hold such significance that their jersey number becomes synonymous with their identity, such as Sachin Tendulkar’s ’10’, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s ‘7’, and Chris Gayle’s ‘333’, among others.

This is the rationale behind the Indian Cricket Board’s distinctive approach to honoring former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

As per Indian media reports, the BCCI has officially retired the number 7 jersey worn by former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, marking this decision 3 and a half years after his retirement. Subsequently, no player will be allowed to wear the number 7 jersey in the future.

Dhoni is the second Indian cricketer to receive this honor from the BCCI. Previously, the BCCI also retired Sachin Tendulkar’s jersey number ’10’, ensuring that no player can don this number in the future.
