Maryam Nawaz Sharif, vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), recently visited flood-ravaged Taunsa to express sympathy to flood victims. She was dressed all in black shalwar kameez and was accompanied by her husband Captain Safdar, other party leaders, and approximately 60 security cars.
On Monday, the Vice President’s “candid” photos from the trip drew criticism for bearing an uncanny resemblance to Angelina Jolie’s photos from her 2010 visit to Pakistan. Nawaz’s pictures on Twitter show her interacting with flood victims and, on occasion, hugging them. “Heartbreaking,” she wrote in the caption of her tweet.
Soon after, social media users began mocking her for “using people’s grief and sorrow as a photo op for her PR strategy,” and the execution was dubbed a “rip-off of Angelina Jolie’s 2010 visit to Pakistan.”
Social media users criticized Nawaz’s clothing choices, the angles of her photos, the “misuse of taxpayer money,” and even called her out for leaving a “insensitive carbon footprint” by bringing a dozen cars, security personnel, motorcycles, and more to her visit in the face of a climate-change disaster.
Users were enraged even more when a video of one of the flood victims surfaced. According to the victim, “Maryam didn’t give anything, just hugged people for a photo session and left.”
On Twitter, a user posted a collage of Angelina and Maryam and wrote, “A cheap third-class copy of Angelina Jolie is roaming around in Pakistan.” The entire family is desperate to be British. She should be ashamed. Maryam Nawaz traveled to South Punjab to meet with flood-affected residents. Please be afraid of God.”
Another person said her protocol was “shameless.” “Maryam Nawaz’s protocol/cavalcade of 63 cars for photo ops in Taunsa is shameless and demonstrates the complexes of the woman and the Sharifs that come with looted and plundered money, not hard-earned or inherited money.”
“Can’t believe she spent crores of rupees on official protocol just to have a photo shoot like Angelina Jolie with the flood victims,” one user wrote, shocked at the blatant insensitivity in such difficult times. It is extremely regrettable to continue feeding elites with taxpayer money.”
A Twitter user shared a video of Maryam hugging a woman while another woman takes pictures on her left. “They act as if they care in front of others. But people don’t realize they’re just playing politics.”
Another user found the situation to be painfully amusing. “It’s ridiculous. Seriously? More than 32 million people have lost their homes and families, and they lack access to basic human needs, and this woman is concerned about her appearance. I’m attempting to be Angelina Jolie. Develop some maturity. What exactly are you? 12?”
A user who commented on her well-groomed appearance questioned how much she actually contributed to the cause. “You went through so much protocol for only four pictures.” Please share how much you donated from your own pocket. Maryam Nawaz, we’re sure you spent two days in the salon getting acrylics and microblading before these photos, and all on tax money.”
Another user noted that nothing has changed in the 12 years since the previous devastating floods.
“Nothing has changed between Angelina Jolie in 2010 and Maryam Nawaz in 2022. There is no preparedness, poor response, slowed recovery and rehabilitation, and no prevention to mitigate the effects of future disasters. The cycle has just begun again! History is repeating itself.”
