The PTI has begun nationwide protests against the assassination of party chief Imran Khan.

The party’s leadership had already stated that nationwide protests would begin after Friday prayers. The party is holding protests in Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Malakand, Rajanpur, Bahawalnagar, Muzaffargarh, and Kohat, in addition to other major cities throughout Pakistan.

The assassination attempt on Khan a day earlier was condemned by Khan’s supporters at a demonstration at Rawalpindi’s Faizabad Interchange.

Islamabad Police has fired tear gas shells on occasion to disperse protesters who had begun throwing rocks at the police and Frontier Corps in the area (FC). The FC and the Islamabad Police have detained a number of PTI employees in Islamabad. Murree Road in Rawalpindi has been closed to traffic. PTI’s female employees, on the other hand, left after protesting at the National Press Club.

The Islamabad Police Department took to Twitter to update the public on the situation in the twin cities.

Protests were held in Lahore against the federal government. Prior to the arrival of the police, PTI members and supporters vandalised public property outside the Governor House’s entrance on Lahore’s Mall Road, causing a traffic jam until the protest was called off. Protests at the GPO crossroads on Mall Road, Thokar Niaz Baig, and Shahdara Chowk in Lahore have disrupted traffic.

Protests are also taking place at the Maulana Zafar Ali Khan crossroads in Wazirabad, where PTI workers have obstructed traffic heading from Lahore to Islamabad.

Police in Karachi are fighting irate demonstrators. Following protests, Karachi’s Shahrah-Faisal Road has reopened to traffic.

Earlier, Karachi Police baton-charged and fired tear gas shells at demonstrators on the city’s main thoroughfare to disperse them.

The police stampede and baton charge on Shahrah-e-Faisal injured Raja Azhar Khan, a PTI MPA. He promised to sue SSP South in court.

“Shelling and rubber bullets cannot bring us down,” he said.

According to the police, there were between 300 and 500 demonstrators marching from the Christian cemetery in Gora Qabaristan to Metropole. Despite numerous warnings, the demonstrators persisted. Finally, police used tear gas to disperse protesters near Jinnah Hospital Mor.

Two hours after the clashes, the police dispersed the demonstrators and fully restored vehicular traffic on Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Protests against Khan’s attempted murder were taking place near Jinnah Hospital Mor. In addition, a number of protesters, including women, were detained by police.

Protesters gathered at the Peshawar motorway interchange and shut it down. They are yelling slogans in support of Khan and in opposition of the federal government. Party members are protesting alongside provincial leaders at Quetta’s Mannan Chowk.

Supporters of Hyderabad are demonstrating at the Haider intersection, and demonstrators are also gathered at the Kashmir intersection in Tharparkar. Traffic has also been halted at the Milad crossroads in Lodhran as a result of the protests.

Demonstrations are taking place in Mansehra’s Main Bazaar, as well as in Orakzai’s Ghilju Bazar Anjani, Feroze Khel, Headquarters crossroads, and Buland Khel neighbourhoods.

PTI workers have blocked the Shaheen Bypass Road in Gujrat, causing several traffic closures. Protests are taking place at Rafiq Shah in Bahawalnagar, and in Rajanpur, supporters are staging sit-ins at Chowk Allahabad, Rojhan, Fazilpur, and Jampur. Tyre burning by PTI workers in Rajanpur has caused a long line of backed-up vehicles on the Sindh-Punjab border.

Supporters have been blocking the Indus Highway in Rajanpur and have previously chanted in protest of their party’s leader’s assassination.
